HST
2008-08-22

The Health Systems Trust (HST) is pleased to announce the 2008 South African Health Review Cover Photography Contest.

ENTRY FORM

This photography contest has a total of R5 000 in prizes to be won and the winning photograph will appear on the cover of the 2008 South African Health Review (SAHR). Furthermore, the top 10 photographs will be showcased at the official launch of the SAHR in November 2008.

The Health Systems Trust (HST) is dynamic independent non-profit organisation, which supports the transformation and development of health systems and services since its inception in 1992. Our approach is to embrace a public health perspective with a focus on Primary Health Care. We support health systems development through research and disseminate information that influences both policy and practice.

Since 1995 HST has published the South African Health Review (SAHR) on an annual basis and its purpose is to highlight progress in key areas of the South African health system, to identify blocks to policy implementation and to make recommendations. This has rapidly become a flagship product of HST, and is widely read, used and quoted as an authoritative reference work in South Africa and abroad by national, provincial and local departments of health, politicians, academics, students, journalists and individuals in the private sector. The Review is distributed in hard copy (more than 800 copies), CD and in PDF format on the HST website. The SAHR receives substantial media coverage with a number of articles written in newspapers, distributed electronically as well as interviews on national and local radio stations.

The theme of the 2008 SAHR publication is, Primary Health Care in South Africa: A Review of 30 years since Alma Ata. All chapters will focus on a series of topics related to Primary Health Care in South Africa and it is therefore important that all photographs reflect in some way this theme. For example, photographs can be of people or objects that relate to one or more of the following areas:

  1. Health management and service delivery in South Africa
  2. Burden of disease: health of the nation, inequities in health
  3. Lifestyle: diet, physical activity or inactivity, tobacco, alcohol, drug and substance abuse, injuries and how these affect the health of South Africans. Also related are chronic diseases, like obesity, diabetes, asthma, stroke, etc.
  4. Infectious diseases (e.g. HIV & AIDS, Tuberculosis, Sexually Transmitted Infections/STI&rsquos) prevention and management of these infectious diseases, health service response and provision of services education about HIV provision of condoms occupational exposure HIV testing and counselling, etc.
  5. Maternal, child and women's health

  8. Human resources (e.g. doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, other health professionals), people who work in public health sector.
  9. Health clinics, public health programmes, outpatient departments in hospitals, etc.
  10. Community involvement in health, intersectoral relationships, equity

General Note: It is important to remember that your photographs must reflect an image(s) of public health in South Africa and not of the private sector.

Entries will have to be accompanied by a copy of a valid student ID and by the name of your school and instructor. Photographs must be high-quality prints and can be colour or black & white. Photographs will become property of HST, which retains rights to publish photographs in future publications, and will not be returned.
